Contemporary Living
Almost all the products for sale are made in Indonesia and showcase some of the best of what is available in the country.
Warwick Purser Lifestyle stores are the concept of Australian designer, Warwick Purser, who has a long standing mission to get Indonesians to have a greater sense of pride in using household items that are “Made in Indonesia”. He argues that these items, which are found in some of the best known shops in the world, such as Harrods, Marks & Spencer, Macys, Target, Habitat to name but a few, are purchased enthusiastically by a sophisticated public in the cities in which these shops are located.
To quote Warwick Purser: “Why should it not be that people here in Indonesia purchase these same products – particularly considering they are much cheaper if purchased locally? So often I have had people in Indonesia come to me and say I bought something like this in New York or London – not realizing the product they purchased was one produced here in Indonesia & that had traveled thousands of kilometers across the seas to the city in which they purchased it.”
Warwick Purser Lifestyle products can be found in several locations in Jakarta and Bali, including stand-alone stores in Kemang. In addition, concept shops are located in Sogo stores in Plaza Senayan, Alun Alun Indonesia, Grand Indonesia and Nusa Dua and other fine department stores.
In addition to Warwick Purser Lifestyle, Warwick Purser also founded and heads Out of Asia, one of South East Asia’s largest exporters of handcrafted products and a major source of products for the Lifestyle stores.
Out of Asia provides full time employment to approximately 10,000 craftspeople throughout Indonesia and Warwick is personally involved in extending his production bases throughout the country. An effort has recently been made to develop a workshop in Pacitan in East Java for marble and stone production. Similarly, a new project for Acehnese craftspeople will see thirty people from that region being developed as trainers in design, product development and production techniques.
Warwick, who has been the recipient of many awards and has received wide press coverage both locally and internationally for his contribution to rural community development, says the major contributors to the success of his works are the people who are making the products – the very talented craftspeople of this country who have the extraordinary ability of being able to make almost anything with their hands. Warwick’s recently published book “Made In Indonesia” is a testament to the natural materials and craftspeople of Indonesia.
Products of Warwick Purser Lifestyle are distributed through PT Alun Alun Indonesia Kreasi, a subsidiary of PT Panen Lestari Internusa (SOGO).
